Walking Tour of Central Pest & Jewish Quarter
Visit the Great Market Hall & The Dohány Synagogue
Duration: 4-hours
With one of our local English-speaking guides, discover the beauty of Central Pest, along with discovering the importance of the Jewish community on Budapest’s history and development.
Begin the day with a visit to Budapest’s Great Market Hall, the largest and oldest indoor market in the city. A truly impressive sight to behold, the market was designed and built around 1896 by the Hungarian architect Samu Pecz, who also worked on the city’s Matthias Church. Even before you enter, you will notice the striking resemblance in the roofs of the two buildings with their ubiquitous colorful roof tiles, produced by a local ingenious tile master by the name of Zsolnay. Though over 100 years old, it still remains an important commercial center of the city, and you will see locals going about their daily shopping at the various stalls throughout the market selling anything from superb fruits, vegetables, special Hungarian foods, and also special gift items such as the lively red Hungarian paprika, and the nifty Hungarian Puzzle Boxes (see if you can figure out the secret way of opening them!).
After your visit of the Market, you will continue to the Dohány Street Synagogue (also known as “The Great Synagogue”), as well as the Memorial to the Holocaust. The largest Jewish temple in Europe, it was built in a striking neo-Oriental style between 1844 and 1859, combing elements of Byzantine and Moorish architecture. A Holocaust memorial and museum have been installed in the courtyard, where mass graves dug during the German occupation can be seen. Theodore Herzl, the founder of Zionism, was born in a communal house in this same courtyard. You will see the sculpture of the Weeping Willow tree, a memorial to the 600,000 Hungarian Jews killed during World War II inscribed on each leaf.
